Conviction:

What I think it means: Crime.
What it means: A firmly held belief or opinion.
Peered:

Gretel opened her mouth to answer him but couldn’t think of a suitable reply, so she looked out the window again instead and peered around for them, but they were nowhere to be seen.
What I think it means: A sharp look.
What it means: Look with difficulty or concentration at someone or something.
Clambered:
Chapter 5 - Page 46 - Paragraph
He indicated a wide armchair facing his desk and Bruno clambered onto it, his feet not quite touching the floor, while his father returned to his seat behind his desk and stared at him.
What I think it means: Climbed.
What it means: Climb in an awkward and laborious way, typically using both hands and feet.
Artificial:

What I think it means: Something fake.
What it means: (of a person or their behaviour) insincere or affected.
Countered:

What I think it means: Happy Feeling
What it means: Showing a rude and arrogant lack of respect.

What I think it means: Counted
What it means: Speak or act in opposition to.
